How to Measure Your Windows for Shutters: A Simple Guide

At Oak Tree Shutters, we understand that choosing shutters is a big decision—one that’s about more than just style and function. It’s also important to manage your budget early in the process, which is why we want to make the measuring step as easy as possible for you.

To help you get an accurate quote for your new shutters, we’ve put together a simple guide on how to measure your windows. These initial measurements allow us to calculate the square metreage of your windows or doors, giving you a more accurate idea of the cost.

We’ve also created a step-by-step video to guide you through the measuring process!

Why Measuring Matters
Shutters are made-to-measure products, so accurate measurements are essential for getting the right price and ensuring a perfect fit. When you first get in touch with us, we’ll ask for some basic measurements to begin the process:
📏 Width in centimetres
📏 Height in centimetres

These initial measurements allow us to calculate the square metreage of your windows, which helps us generate a more accurate quote. By providing these details upfront, we can give you an estimated cost quickly—making it easier to plan your budget.

Once you’ve received your quote and are happy to proceed, we’ll schedule a technical measure where we’ll take more detailed measurements and check for any potential obstacles or issues. This ensures that your shutters will fit perfectly when it’s time for installation.

How to Measure Your Windows for Shutters
🛠️ What You’ll Need:
✔ A metal tape measure (for accuracy)
✔ A notepad or phone to record your measurements

Step 1: Decide Where the Shutters Will Be Fitted
You can choose to mount your shutters either:
1️⃣ Inside the recess (inside mount) – Sleek, clean look.
2️⃣ Outside the recess (outside mount) – Ideal for shallow window frames or larger windows.
Your choice will affect your measurements, so decide this first.

Step 2: Measure the Width
For width, measure across the top of the window.
If you are planning an inside mount, this will be the inside of the window frame. For an outside mount, measure across the frame where the shutters will sit.

Step 3: Measure the Height
For height, measure from the top of the window frame to the bottom of the frame or where you want the shutters to end.

Why DIY Measuring Helps with Budgeting
By providing these basic measurements when you first contact us, we can give you an estimated cost based on the size of your windows. This helps you plan your budget before committing to a full professional measure.

What Happens After the Quote?
Once you’ve received your quote and are ready to move forward, we’ll arrange for a technical measure. During this visit, we’ll take more precise measurements, checking for any details such as uneven walls or obstacles like window handles. This ensures a perfect fit for your shutters when we come to install them.
